About Photographer Darren Wright

I’m Darren, a photographer who’s made the Huon Valley my home. I’ve found my rhythm photographing this incredible part of the world, and honestly, I can’t imagine being anywhere else.

I moved to lutruwita/Tasmania permanently in late 2022 when I took on the role of Industry Support and Marketing Coordinator for Destination Southern Tasmania. What started as a career move quickly became something much deeper, a genuine love affair with this place and its endless photographic possibilities.

The thing about Southern Tasmania is that it keeps surprising you. I’ve been here for around three years now, and I’m still discovering new places to photograph, or the regular haunts under different light. Whether I’m photographing kunanyi/Mount Wellington from Hobart’s waterfront, the Huon River at dawn, or finding myself under massive tree ferns, deep in the Grove of Giants, there’s always something screaming to be captured.

My work takes me all over the region, visiting businesses and attractions, which means I get to see Southern Tasmania from angles most people never experience. I’ve photographed everything from heritage buildings and abandoned places to hidden beaches and snowcapped mountains, waterfalls and autumn leaves to our national parks and dark skies.

I always carry a camera, because Tasmanian light changes so quickly. Some days you plan a specific shoot and come home with nothing worth keeping. Other days, you’re just heading to town and stumble across something magical. That’s the reality of photography here, you learn to work with what Tasmania gives you.

These days, I pick my adventures more carefully than I used to, but that’s led me to appreciate the accessible beauty that’s right on our doorstep. The Heritage Highway between here and Launceston, the coastal drives around Bruny, even the short walks around Dover, there’s no shortage of subjects within an easy drive from home.

My portfolio has grown to include landscapes, events, real estate, and tourism photography. Each project teaches me something new about this place, and that continuous learning is what keeps me passionate about the craft. After years of photographing, I’m convinced there’s no better canvas for a photographer then southern Tasmania.

Being able to combine my love of photography with promoting this region through my role at Destination Southern Tasmania feels like the perfect fit. I get to show people what makes this corner of the world so special, one photo at a time.
