You know those spots you just stumble into by accident and wonder how on earth you never noticed them before? That was me and Bidencopes Lane—took a wrong turn off Murray Street and bam, straight into a graffiti wonderland.
What looks like a forgotten alley at first glance is actually one of Hobart’s coolest art spaces. Once home to Tasmania’s fanciest fashion house (founded by a Polish tailor with a wild backstory and a thing for rabbit-fur hats), it’s now a riot of spray paint, stickers, and unapologetic creativity. Think layers upon layers of colour, political messages, and characters staring down at you from 10-metre walls.
The best part? It’s all totally legal now. Since 2019, Bidencopes has been Hobart’s first official permission wall—anyone with a spray can and a permit (super easy to get online) can leave their mark. It’s raw, temporary, and always changing—blink and your favourite piece might be gone tomorrow.
From a photography angle, this place is an urban playground. Harsh lines, shadows, narrow framing—it’s all about getting low, going wide, and chasing the light as it slices through the alley. Morning and late arvo? Magic.
So here’s a peek into this ever-evolving outdoor gallery—gritty, honest, and 100% Hobart.
